Putting it Together - Subliminal Color and Marketing

I must apologize for the lack of posts recently. Even this is supposed to be a Friday, not Saturday post. But it came to mind today, and I couldn't wait til next week. Things have been busy, taking Poppy to the Dr every week, to check on her expected baby, shopping to get every little thing she will need, and then there's the finishing of the house/bathroom too.

I've been getting a lot of email spam from pretty big retailers, and I noticed that about 80% of them had medium green borders on their ads. I wondered what this particular color meant subliminally. I do know that color is not just randomly chosen for ads.

Subliminal color marketing is very important in advertising. It could be the most important thing you do in your marketing.  I also know that marketing schemes have to change with current economy and trends. For instance, marketing colors and even product should be different when the economy is good. Your product can be more flamboyant and abstract when there is more money, but should be more homey, vintage, and comforting when the economy is down.

So what about color? I found a few good articles that explain what colors mean subliminally. You can read them to find out which color would be best to market your merchandise. The first article focuses on the meaning of color for marketing. For instance Green might mean growth, nature, money, fertility and safety. Maybe that's why it is used in all the ads I'm getting. Read "Color Psychology"

The second article is geared to business cards, which I found very interesting. Maybe I should have read this before I made mine. Seems I did OK though with my color choice and themes. Read "Color Theory and Business Cards". There are also some great links at the bottom of the Business Card posting.

Sunday, October 23, 2011

I know, I know! You're supposed to get a recipe today. But if you haven't noticed I haven't really posted anything this week. I know, I know there are only 3 people that read this anyway so who cares.

But I got this  new car. It was nice when we got it but after a few days the Drivers door stuck and the check engine light came on. CE light is actually a mood light that goes on and off. The Door is not moody though, and I slide over or around the console to get in the drivers seat. I used to be double jointed, now in my old age I'm as flexible as a 20 yr old, thank goodness. Car looks pretty good in the pics, not much cancer for 193K miles. Anyhow New Car = Shopping

Then there was Dr Horrible lab coat buttons to sew, and labels for Poppy's packages and the bathroom to work on and Poppy's Baby shower to prepare for.

I started a baby afghan a month ago and never finished. The night before the shower I decided worked for 6 hours til 2 AM and 2 hours at 6 AM the day of the shower, but it got finished. This is a lousy flash picture, colors are much nicer. I'll take a better one if we ever get sun.

Poppy will be mad that I posted this picture, but I thought it was a cute silhouette of the baby bump and the baby shower sign.  Just don't tell her and maybe she'll be too busy to read the blog. She is taking a few more costume orders, crazy lady.

Anyhow, I hope things settle down a bit and I only have to finish the bathroom, clean and organize the new baby's room and the rest of the house (and sew on a few more buttons).

I almost forgot that I started to make new Bow Ties for my Housewares shop. Still have some work to do on them, but with any luck I will have cute genre bow ties with adjustable velcro on ribbon neck bands. I still have more to make, but if your Geek Guys love Bow Ties stop in the shop. Poppy's Garden Gate

Oh and Google changed requirements so I had to update about 300 items on my Artfire shops because they all fell in the category that required color specifications.

So that's what I've been up to if you were at all interested. Hoping this week will be a bit calmer.

What Evah! - Things that Drive me Crazy - Part Two

You know it drives me crazy when people don't agree with me, and not so much, because so few people even understand what I'm talking about half the time. Here are a few more things that really drive me CRAZY!

Mosquitoes

Enthusiastic fitness coaches

People who call for their cat at Midnight (did I say that already)

Whoever creates the DM Spam on Twitter

TV networks that make a series and cancel after 2 or 3 weeks. They will all not be #1,  give it a chance won't you.  (except for the caveman show that never should have seen the light of day)

Hamsters driving cars. Why would that make me want to buy one?

Snotty or rude sales clerks.

Sticky Price tags you can't remove off your new merchandise.

What's Cooking? - Snake Sandwich

We always make this Sandwich for Halloween, Like a sub but creepier. You can use the Snake Sandwich recipe from  My Recipes, or you can embellish it like we do.

Use either 3 1 lb loaves of frozen Pizza dough, or one recipe of our French Baguette dough.

Shape Dough into a slithering snake and press or draw in scales. You can also wash the top of bread with green food coloring, or green tinted eggwash for an extra creepy snake.

Let bread rise and bake until done. After cooling. Slice loaf longways. Fill with your favorite sandwich makings. We use Provolone slices, salami, ham, lettuce, black olives and mild pepper rings, with a chipotle mayonnaise.

Complete with  the Snake with Stuffed Green olives cut in half for eyes, and a Red Pepper tongue.

Shops I Like - Halloween

I know I'm a little late getting together Halloween, and there is so much I love. Most custom sellers have removed their items already. I just love Halloween, because it's the one day you get to be something else with everyone's approval. I wonder if Actors get the same rush we all get at Halloween. If you don't "dress up" for Halloween, you should try it some time. Break out of your shell and have some fun.

Anyhow, here are some shops I like that really get into the SPIRIT. And even though it's not scary, I just love the Sushi Baby. And HOW could I leave out my DD Poppy ;)

What Evah! - Things that Drive me Crazy - Part One

Of course it drives me crazy when people don't agree with me. OK, maybe not so much, because so few people even understand what I'm talking about half the time. But there are a few things that really drive me CRAZY!

Game shows contestants that say "I'm married to my wife/husband (enter name). Who else would you be married to???

People who tweet pictures of themselves from dressing rooms while getting opinions on what clothes to buy.

Slow cashiers, or chatty cashiers which equate to the slow cashiers, taking too long to move on.

Phone callers with no ID, because I drop everything, run to the phone, and won't answer.

Spinach getting stuck in my teeth, because I like spinach

Crazy next door neighbor that calls "here kitty, kitty, kitty" by my house at midnight when I'm trying to sleep.

Medical professionals that hug. I don't want a hug from my Dr or NP. Totally unprofessional.

Those racks and shelves in stores that cut into your arm as you walk by because the aisles are too narrow.

Parents who don't take the time to teach their children to respect others.

Parents who let their children stand in grocery carts.

Dogs that bark constantly for no apparent reason.

Christmas decorations that don't get taken down til Valentines Day.

People I have dinner with that don't tip enough so I have to make up the difference.

Bosses who stand over your shoulder and watch you work.

That's enough for today. I'm sure I'll revisit this soon with more annoyances. And as you might already guess, I am already CRAZY.

Life on Mars - Real Progress

Real Progress in the Bathroom that is. Yes we have walls. No more cats disappearing down the crawlspace, No more creepy window over the bathtub. Yay! Maybe in a few days I'll get it all done. HA!

I have to Wipe down the walls smooth and touch up. Then paint the walls and floor. Then put in the sink and or beadboard walls, whichever comes first. Then plumb the sink and or put in the flooring.

We are doing linoleum over sealed wood, because it's cheaper and it isn't even really our house and I'd have to lift the toilet again to put in tile and I'm not doing that again for a couple of years. Maybe another year.

I am going to be so happy when I don't have to crawl over a pile of drills, nails, hammers and screwdrivers to take a bath. And that long pipe coming out of the wall, waiting for a faucet, really shoots out the water across more than half the tub.

What's Cooking? - Vampire Blood Punch

Punch Bowl from Leonord1.etsy.com
Having a Party and Not sure what beverage to serve? Well if you really want to liven up the party serve my Vampire Blood Punch, but take away your guests keys and make up the guest rooms. This one is wicked sneaky and you don't want to be responsible for Out of control behavior. But on Halloween, it's so much fun.

Very Simple recipe, just add ingredients and stir. I like to add ice cubes embedded with plastic, insects, fingers, anything to gross out my guests. The beverage is wonderfully dark and concealing so the surprises don't really show until they bottom up. I am so wicked.

VAMPIRE BLOOD PUNCH

2 - 2 liter bottles of Cherry Strawberry Soda
2 - 2 liter bottles of Dr Pepper Soda
1 liter of vodka

Putting it Together - Prepping for the Rush

November to Mid December is the Busiest time of the Year for many of us! I hope you are ready.

With busy lives shoppers turn to the internet to complete their Holiday shopping. Be prepared for the rush.

Business Cards: I always include a few business cards so buyers can share. I include a card from my less visited shop with a coupon code printed on the back as a Thank You for shopping in my primary shop. Business Cards are a Great way to promote you business.

Never think they are unimportant, because buyers might stick them in their wallet or purse and pull out to share with friends. I buy from Vistaprint because they are very reasonable and I can afford to give away a few with each purchase. Many sellers buy Moo Cards and I have bought from Overnight Prints too, and their quality is very good.

You don't have to be all business either. This is my business card for My Flower Jewelry Shop.

Packaging: Make sure you have enough materials for packaging in stock. You don't want to be caught short handed, especially if you order packaging on line. Remember, your supplier will be busy too.

I like to combine local and internet materials. I buy my jewelry boxes from Paper Mart, my packaging supplies on eBay, because most sellers deliver quickly, and my tissue and ribbon at a local dollar store.

I put my jewelry in hand stamped boxes made of post consumer recycled paper. My Aprons and Housewares are Wrapped in Colorful Tissue with Ribbon Ties.

Newspaper makes a Great wrapping, but not for fabric or anything else that can transfer the ink onto. Don't be afraid to recycle, especially if your items are eco friendly. Scrap or clearance Fabric makes nice wrapping too, especially with pinked edges. Walmart is bringing back fabric and even has 5 yd bolts for $5 that's a lot of wrapping material.

Gifts: It's nice to include a little gift. Many people include candy, but I prefer not to eat candy that has been shipped with a gift myself, so I'm not sure that that is the greatest thing so send.

I sometimes make refrigerator magnets of my Jewelry Business Card. That's why I made a quote that they might like to keep. I also have pencils printed with my shop address. I get them made at Oriental Trading. They are reasonable and a practical gift that keeps reminding the buyer where they shopped. Oriental Trading also has lots of other reasonable fun gifts.

There are also a LOT of neat things on Etsy, Artfire and even eBay that can be bought in bulk and used as gifts or packaging. That way you can support other sellers too. I use envelopes that I bought from Piping Hot Papers for business cards for special purchases.

This shop also has little matchbook notepads and other great little gifties.

So stock up your supplies. It's going to be a long and fruitful Holiday Season. People will be so tired of tightening their belts that they are going to want to let loose a little and have some fun.  So sit back and enjoy the ride.

Shops I Like - Autumn Leaves

I loved Last Weeks collection so much I had to do it again. Autumn that is. But this time It's Autumn Leaves.

For those of you that don't live in the North and have never seen the beautiful Fall colors. You should take a trip sometime. It's wonderful when the trees look like fire and the leaves crunch under your feet. Our school yard was surrounded by Maples. In the fall we would make house floor plans of them and pretend we were living in those huge rooms.

Life on Mars - Progress?

Thought I'd share some of my bathroom pics with you. It's going as slow as I thought it would, but much slower than Poppy's DH thought it would. I do have a little more experience though. He wanted to do the whole thing himself, but I told him as long as he did the gutting and the heavy lifting, I'd finish the rest.

I think if he would have tried to solder the bathtub faucet pipe he would have quit, because for some reason the old 1/2" pipe is slightly smaller than the new 1/2" pipe. I'm sure copper doesn't shrink with age, does it? The fittings are not tight enough to sweat the solder. I thought I lost my touch, but not my fault.

While I work on a permanent fix, I put on the faucet sideways as you can see in the picture below. Cute eh? But we can bathe, or can we?

Not a perfect world, but it works. It drips a teeny bit, but there is a hole that goes to the ground under the house, no basement. As a matter of fact, some of the cats sneak down there now that it's open. I think they think it's a nice potty. Hope I get them all out before I put the wall back. I'll have to do a head count.

Well now there are some drain problems. The tub was a great deal. It was a display. I guess I didn't notice, because I didn't put the tub in the room, and didn't inspect it well enough, that there is a chip at the drain. Nice sized chunk missing. I found it by hearing the water pour out under the tub. When I removed the drain to figure out why, there was the hole the water was pouring out of. Today I have to reset the drain and patch the hole with epoxy.

We also found this on one side of the bathroom. It's the siding and a window from the old cottage, before the kitchen and bath were added. They used to use an outhouse. Really, and this bathroom was added in the 70s.

As for the Kitties, the day I cut the Drywall, I was running through the house, cutting drywall in the kitchen, and wood outside. When I finally got all the drywall cut I ran through the living room and saw a huge puddle of blood. I knew it wasn't me, so I immediately thought one of the cats got hurt. That was way too much blood for one of the kitties to survive and it was an awful lot for an adult cat too. I was freaking out.

I looked for the kittens, both napping, no cuts. The two adult grays weren't hurt either. I was puzzled. Then I took a closer look at the puddle of blood. There was a little gel cap in the middle of one of the puddles. Running around I had stepped in one of the boys Halloween Blood caps that the kittens had soccered to the middle of the floor. I laughed at myself and got out the mop.

I just love home repair and I can't wait to do more. Did you detect a note of sarcasm?

What's Cooking? - Shrimp Brains

Aaah Halloween. We love it here in this household. We always have a feast after Trick or Treat. For the next few weeks I'm going to share some of our favorite Halloween recipes.

This is an old recipe, you might remember it from the 80s. But the twist is to put it in a brain shaped mold.  Add some Red Pepper "Bloody Fingers" and Green Olive "Monster Eyes" to pretty it up.

SHRIMP MOLD

2 cans shrimp, drained and chopped, or 2 cups cooked chopped shrimp
8 oz package cream cheese
1 can tomato soup
2 envelopes unflavored gelatin
1/2 cup cold water
1 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup chopped celery
1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper
dash of Tabasco

Melt cream cheese and soup in a saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat. Add gelatin to cold water and dissolve. Add gelatin mixture to soup mixture. Add shrimp, vegetables and mayonnaise and mix well. Pour into oiled mold. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

To unmold, place mold in warm water for a minute. Put your plate on open side of mold and quickly invert. Your "brains" should fall out easily. Serve as a spread with your favorite crackers. For super gross, bloody brains, drizzle a bit of ketchup around the "brain" it won't really affect the taste much, because the mold already contains tomato.
