Medical Update

First I want to thank all of you who have sent positive thoughts and prayers our way. For those of you who don't know, my son was born with a serious heart defect. He has had 2 open heart surgeries for repair and after nearly 20 years, one of his replacement valves is leaking. He was told that he needed surgery immediately so we rushed him to the Cleveland Clinic.

Here is the latest news. My son is back home in North Dakota. His Doctor at the Cleveland Clinic put him on medication that has alleviated a lot of the pressure and him feel much better. His heart is leaking at 35% and he will not be critical until it reaches 50%. What that means exactly, neither of us is sure. He will need surgery soon, but not immediately. It also sounds like they can repair the leak through an artery instead of opening his chest and heart again. Much better for him. It also seems that he will need several operations over the next few years.

Right now he is working with lawyers and the government, trying to get disability insurance to pay for the surgery. He is disabled, but our government likes to fight even obvious cases. He has to hire a lawyer and loose some of the money he is entitled to, to fight to get what is his. He has worked for years, even though he could have collected, and finally applied for help when he was just too week to work full time. He was turned down by the Social Security Doctors who only took an x ray to determine his condition. It really irks me that when someone really needs the help, our government uses road blocks to stop them. He is not up for review until August. We're hoping the lawyer can push it up for this emergency case.

I just wanted to post an update and once again thank you all for you positive energy and prayers. My son is so much better now than he was when he came here, and things are looking up.

I am so glad to know that the crisis has passed & your son is stable. I am so sorry that Y'all have to fight against an outdated, obtuse & sometimes downright cruel disability apparatus. I have been told that all cases are denied the first time around. Good luck in your fight to get your son what he needs & deserves. I am, as always, pulling for you! :) Crusty

I've heard that they are all turned down the first time too. Which makes some people who deserve the help quit and some have to pay what little they have to get a lawyer. In my son's case, 25% of his back pay. He applied over a year ago, so that's 25% of the money he should have gotten. And who know, maybe the lawyers will drag it out so they get more.

Hearing all this really irks me... I hate how the health system over there works...

I just hope everything will get fixed soon and all going for the best!
